We had a wild animal encounter with a common Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) displaying blue, black, red, and silver coloration. These are known as "cross foxes". Famous for their "mousing pounce", you can watch them listen intently and then pounce, driving their front paws through the snow the pin a rodent below. They also hunt birds and eat berries. In the early winter when prey becomes harder to find, foxes will turn to mushrooms that supply them with essential vitamins (B & D) and minerals. It is noted that foxes, like squirrels and reindeer, are specifically observed to eat the iconic red-and-white Amanita muscaria mushrooms... Because foxes find mushrooms attractive, they are sometimes used by trappers or researchers to lure them out of their dens.
