Wild Animal Encounter - Pine Marten

We had a wild animal encounter with a Pine Marten (Martes americana) at one of the local hunting cabins who came to eat some Moose bones. A smaller cousin of the Wolverine, Martens will hunt animals many times their own size! They are able to eat enormous amounts of food in a single sitting. Known as carnivores, they actually eat a varied diet including eggs & insects. In the autumn, Martens seek out foods high in sugar & nutrition, leading them to feast on mineral rich Wild Mushrooms & sweet Black Huckleberries.
